My girlfriend isn't vegan, but she and her mom make vegan things for me all the time. I wish they would consider it, but they never do. I live in a meat and seafood heavy place though, so I'm one of a small handful of vegans. We have about five or ten vegan stores in total. That includes organic grocers and resturants. We have ZERO fully vegan establishments. So for me I'm used to having people eat meat around me.

If I had a choice though, I'd date a vegan. I can't stand people who don't give a shit what they put in their mouth. My dad today actually listed coleslaw as an ingredient. As if you could list that on a food label. He still has no idea why real syrup is better for you.

Anyway, go vegan or go home. I'll be moving to Portland, OR soon.

Great bit, Heather! Luckily for my hubs, Spence, and I, we met as carnis and I went vegan 2 years in. After a very loud and emotional confrontation - me: "You HAVE to see this video I just found!! OMG!", him: "I don't want to! GRRR!!" - I never brought it up again. After two months of leaving my vegan lit around the house and living as a strict vegan, he announced to me one morning "I want to be vegan". In nearly four years, neither him nor I have ever been tempted to "cheat" and our 15 month old daughter has been vegan since conception. Woot woot!!

For me, veganism, animal rights and environmentalism are my life. I was lucky to be born a human with a voice, unlike our non-human brethren (both flora and fauna), so I am going to use this life to speak for those who are ignored. I wouldn't ever date a non-vegan but if I dug a dude and he chose to go vegan after being educated, sure. But lucky for me, I've already bagged my compassionate man!

All that being said, I can't imagine what parenting must be like for "mixed" parenting couples. Oh god... that, for me, would be hell!!

Great story! All of my girlfriend started off as carnivores then slowly became either full vegetarians or down to eating meat only rarely. One of them almost became vegan. But what's interesting is that I never pressured any of them, just kindly educated from time to time... though if I had seen them eating meat, I wouldn't be too enthusiastic to kiss them after or anything like that.... nowadays... if I were to marry someone and have a kid with them, they couldn't eat meat... sorry, but I couldn't stand by and know that my child was being poisoned. I'm not ever sure if I could go out with a carnivore at this point in my life; sure, I could date one.. and perhaps form a great friendship... or something a bit more :) ... but I'm not sure how serious I could get with someone who willing supports the meat industry knowing the damage to your body, the earth, and the helpless animals. I just couldn't accept that from a person who I could spend the rest of my life with. Nope.
